Roles & Responsibilities
Requirements to Apply
A Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) plays a vital role in ensuring that students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) receive the appropriate support and resources to excel academically and personally. The SENCO's primary responsibility involves overseeing the development and implementation of individualised education plans (IEPs) for students with SEND. This includes assessing each student's unique needs and coordinating with teachers, parents, and external specialists to create tailored interventions and support strategies. By monitoring progress and making necessary adjustments, the SENCO ensures that all students have the opportunity to succeed within the mainstream educational setting.

In addition to managing IEPs, the SENCO is responsible for providing guidance and training to teaching staff on effective strategies for supporting students with SEND. This includes organising professional development workshops, sharing best practices, and fostering an inclusive classroom environment. The SENCO plays a key role in raising awareness and understanding of SEND issues among staff, ensuring that all educators are well-equipped to support diverse learners. By promoting a collaborative approach, the SENCO helps create a supportive and adaptable learning environment that benefits all students.

The SENCO also acts as a liaison between the school, parents, and external agencies, such as educational psychologists and speech therapists. They facilitate regular communication and meetings to discuss students' progress and address any concerns or challenges. The SENCO ensures that parents are kept informed about their child's educational journey and are actively involved in decision-making processes. Additionally, the SENCO is responsible for maintaining accurate records of students' progress and interventions, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and contributing to school-wide data analysis to guide strategic planning. Their role is crucial in ensuring that students with SEND receive the support they need to reach their full potential and benefit from a high-quality education.
